The use of the name of one thing in the place of the name of another thing to which it has a logical relationship.

Examples: "The Crown" in reference to the King. "The anaphylaxis in room 14" (this would have described me recently, actually) in reference to the patient therein with the said condition. "The sword" in reference to military power.
